Technical Writing
What does storytelling have to do with Technical Writing? Plenty. Far too often,
companies pass out training materials or help manuals that are, in the very least, dry and
confusing. If programmers are in charge of the documentation, often these materials are
complicated.
Infuse your documentation with the story of your product. Let us describe how each
feature works to make your customers' lives easier.
In addition to being storytellers, we feel that good Technical Writers are also teachers
and translators — we translate the information we receive from the programmer or
engineer into easy to follow instructions to teach the user — your customer.
Very often, this involves:
- Reorganizing the material. Usually, a good portion of the information is
documented, but it needs to be organized from a teacher’s perspective, rather than a
programmer’s perspective.
- Translating techno-jargon into user-friendly steps.
- Capturing and detailing screen shots to help your users feel grounded in the
material.
- Quality Assurance. This inevitably becomes part of the job, as we work in the
software the same way a user would while we document the steps. We’ll let you
know if we find any quirks or bugs, and keep you informed of anything we notice
that would make the process better.
A good user manual reduces calls to your Help Desk, saving you time and money. Plus, a
good user manual helps create happy customers—and remember, happy customers
become loyal customers.
